Are you learning the same verses you reset or others?🛐

joosep 2020-03-27 03:18

They are mostly verses I reset in the past. I have a kind of core group which I'm repeating and learning: Romans 1-8, Philippians, Galatians, and individual verses. Other verses I'm adding as a kind of reading program. I add them, practice many of them as I add, but I might not be reviewing them again until months or perhaps years from now. Just the way I'm doing it ... but I don't plan to reset again.

Wow, you know all of those chapters! How long has it taken you, how long have you been on learn scripture? Can you easily recite them?

joosep 2020-03-27 13:15

No, I don't know all of those chapters -- those three (Romans 1-8, Philippians, Galatians) I'm now in the process of learning, they are in my review queue. I could recite fairly well Romans 1-3 (but I started working on those in 1974 right after I became a Christian! so there's nothing very impressive to it) Philippians 1-3 I possibly could recite, but I haven't tried -- I've been working those during the past several months. It's a great idea however, MrsSpooner, perhaps I will try reciting some of those for my wife :)

I started on LearnScripture in May 2015 and used Memverse before that. There's nothing special to what I'm doing ... just repetition over a long period of time of being a Christian. In the nineties, I used a pen and a notebook. In the eighties, I used flash cards. Eventually anyone could do it with that much time. But there's been a lot of inconsistency, sad to say. If I had been more consistent throughout my Christian life, I would have had a lot more verses memorized than I do now. I thank God every day for His grace. He does not change and His love and mercy endure forever!

Is there a way to reset a whole chapter? What happens if you start to learn it again. Does progress start at zero again?

joosep 2020-03-29 00:08

It seems to me you have to reset verses individually. You can "stop learning" entire passages but resetting the score back to zero has to be done verse by verse. So, what happened in my own case was a little different. A few months ago the New American Standard version became available on this website. That version just happens to be the version in which I used to memorize verses after first becoming a Christian. And it's also the version I've used for reading the Bible ever since then. So, I simply "stopped learning" on almost all of my verses in the ESV and started learning in the NAS. By doing that, my scores were all at 0%, because it was a new version.

If I for some reason decided to switch back to the ESV and start learning those again, my test score or percentages for that version would be presented to me ... whatever progress I had made in those verses is still saved.

One thing I'd like to emphasize here.... I am a firm believer that there are several very good versions of the Bible in English. The NAS simply happens to be, in my own case, the version to which I became accustomed from the very beginning. I am not in any way trying to say that the NAS is "better".

I know that this is a lot to read, and I hope that people will keep reading. For new users of this website: I recommend following the pattern that Luke, the website founder, recommends. I don't recommend re-setting verses for everyone. Rather, add what verses you feel you can manage on a daily basis. I think that 1 Cor 9:24 applies here. "Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win." I believe sincerely that what Paul means here is not so much to think about finishing the race ahead of other people, but rather, measuring your pace in such a way, so that you FINISH the race. So I think that applies to this website, too. Run in such a way as to win, as to finish.

I want to finish by saying that God is so good ... as I've said many times in comments here, His goodness, at the age of 64, astounds me and causes me to worship Him. That change in my life is recent. My wife could attest to it, were she here. It's come about via meditating on and learning God's Word during the past five years, both here and also at other scripture memorization websites. Please know His goodness in your lives during these very fearful times. Worship God instead of fearing :)

One last comment for JDJDJD: if you simply choose to "stop learning" your test scores will be saved. That means you can resume them in the future and you will still be at 43% or wherever it is. To get everything back to zero, you have to, I believe, reset each verse individually as you review them. Those which you reset go back to zero. In my own case, I simply started learning in a new version, as described above.

I reset my verses every few days to keep them fresh because I don't have "verse completion" as a goal.
It takes 11 clicks to reset one verse to empty boxes, which is annoying.
It would be nice to have the option of daily review without all the clicking.
If enough people want this, perhaps Luke would do it for us?

Interesting discussion here. I’d like a way to be able to review and re-learn where necessary a complete chapter (verse set) that I completed a long time ago, and have now partially forgotten. And in doing so, to let any verses in that chapter that I do badly on to drop below 100% and therefore re-enter the review cycle. Is this what you’d like JDJDJD?

JDJDJD 2020-03-29 20:54

Yes Peter that’s what’s in my mind. I got such benefit in meditating on some of the first verses I did. Some of them were on the character of God. They really strengthened my faith. I just tried stopping a verse and the next day restarted it but it just put it back to the %age I was previously at. I really wanted to start it from scratch as if I hadn’t learnt it. Others too, particularly during this coronavirus crisis. It’s good to keep going over that God is sovereign. I have a few favourite chapters it would be good to go over again from scratch.
Thanks Joosep for all your comments. You are absolutely right. Thanks for keeping it all before us.

To JDJDJD and PeterP: it seems to me -- if I understand correctly what you want to accomplish -- that you can simply click through the passage in question and reset the progress of some of them.

1-go to the Verse Progress screen.
2-find the passage in question by entering into the search box one of the verses from the passage.
3-click on the box to the right of the stars for the appropriate verse
4-you'll see appear two options. "Practise ..." or "Stop learning....". Click on Practise. If it's not fully learnt, and is due, it will say "Review" or "Stop Learning".
5-Then click through the passage. To the right of the percentage symbol for each verse is a box with three lines. Click on it. Choose "Reset Progress" for each verse which you want to reset to zero. You can also skip verses using the same set of options. You can pin that little options screen to make it more convenient for you.
6-When you're done, let's say if we are talking about John 1, you might have a passage which will be presented in your review queue as 20 verses for review, but with the rest still as fully learnt.
7-You can follow the same method to reset individual verses fully learnt back to zero, if desired.
