Description

Fulfilling the Greatest Commandment: Loving God and Loving Others

Matthew 26: 36-39 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Verses

  • John 13:34-35: "I give you a new commandment - to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples - if you have love for one another."

  • Galatians 5:22-23: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

  • Ephesians 4:1-3: I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

  • Colossians 3:12-15: Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a heart of mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if someone happens to have a complaint against anyone else. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also forgive others. And to all these virtues add love, which is the perfect bond. Let the peace of Christ be in control in your heart (for you were in fact called as one body to this peace), and be thankful.

  • Colossians 3:16-17: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace in your hearts to God. And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  • Romans 12:9-12: Love must be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil, cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another. Do not lag in zeal, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, endure in suffering, persist in prayer.

  • Romans 12:13: Contribute to the needs of the saints, pursue hospitality.

  • Romans 12:15: Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

  • Romans 12:16: Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly. Do not be conceited.

  • Romans 12:18-20: If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all people. Do not avenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God's wrath, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay," says the Lord. Rather, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing this you will be heaping burning coals on his head.

  • Romans 12:21: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

  • Romans 14:19: So then, let us pursue what makes for peace and for building up one another.

  • Galatians 5:6: For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision carries any weight - the only thing that matters is faith working through love.

  • 1 Peter 1:22: You have purified your souls by obeying the truth in order to show sincere mutual love. So love one another earnestly from a pure heart.

  • 1 Peter 3:8-11: Finally, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, affectionate, compassionate, and humble. Do not return evil for evil or insult for insult, but instead bless others because you were called to inherit a blessing. Forthe one who wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from uttering deceit. And he must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.

  • Psalm 133:1: Look! How good and how pleasant it is when brothers live together!

  • Philippians 2:3: Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself.
