Description

Psalm 139 is bookended with references to Yahweh's intimate knowledge. [139:1 "O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me." 139:23-24 "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."] He knows all of our thoughts, words, and actions (vv. 1-6). Yahweh's omnipresence means that He always knows our location. The phrase "wings of the morning" likely refers to the sun rising in the east, and "the uttermost parts of the sea" implies the end of the Mediterranean Sea, the western border of Palestine. David is saying no matter how high or low, how far east or west, I go--I will never escape your presence and your full knowledge of my actions

Verses

  • Psalm 139:7-10: Where can I go to escape your spirit? Where can I flee to escape your presence? If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there. If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be. If I were to fly away on the wings of the dawn, and settle down on the other side of the sea, even there your hand would guide me, your right hand would grab hold of me.
