Description
Secular society considers gossip to be harmless, in fact there are entire TV Networks dedicated to it, but is it really as harmless as they make it out to be? When concerning gossip, The Bible strongly disagrees with such a foolish notion. Though this is a very popular thing to indulge within nowadays, it is a sin worth avoiding and has great consequences for not doing so. The Bible also says it is dangerous to trust someone with the reputation of a being a gossip, or as the King James calls it a 'talebearer', because of how they'll treat you and your secrets...
"You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say." —Martin Luther
Verses
-
Leviticus 19:16: You must not go about as a slanderer among your people. You must not stand idly by when your neighbor's life is at stake. I am the LORD.
-
Psalm 34:13-14: Then make sure you don't speak evil words or use deceptive speech! Turn away from evil and do what is right! Strive for peace and promote it!
-
Proverbs 20:19: The one who goes about gossiping reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with someone who is always opening his mouth.
-
Proverbs 16:27-28: A wicked scoundrel digs up evil, and his slander is like a scorching fire. A perverse person spreads dissension, and a gossip separates the closest friends.
-
1 Timothy 6:4-5: he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in controversies and verbal disputes. This gives rise to envy, dissension, slanders, evil suspicions, and constant bickering by people corrupted in their minds and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a way of making a profit.
-
Proverbs 26:20-22: Where there is no wood, a fire goes out, and where there is no gossip, contention ceases. Like charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, so is a contentious person to kindle strife. The words of a gossip are like delicious morsels; they go down into a person's innermost being.
-
Proverbs 11:12-13: The one who denounces his neighbor lacks wisdom, but the one who has discernment keeps silent. The one who goes about slandering others reveals secrets, but the one who is trustworthy conceals a matter.
-
1 Peter 4:15: But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker.
