Description

Defending the doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement. Verses showing that God's wrath is directed personally at the sinner (not just at sin as a cosmic force) and thus the need for a substitute to propitiate his righteous wrath on their behalf.

Verses

  • Romans 1:18: For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness,

  • Romans 1:32: Although they fully know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but also approve of those who practice them.

  • Ephesians 5:6: Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things God's wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.

  • John 3:36: The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. The one who rejects the Son will not see life, but God's wrath remains on him.

  • Romans 2:5-6: But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourselves in the day of wrath, when God's righteous judgment is revealed! He will reward each one according to his works:

  • Revelation 14:9-10: A third angel followed the first two, declaring in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and takes the mark on his forehead or his hand, that person will also drink of the wine of God's anger that has been mixed undiluted in the cup of his wrath, and he will be tortured with fire and sulfur in front of the holy angels and in front of the Lamb.

  • 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9: and to you who are being afflicted to give rest together with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels. With flaming fire he will mete out punishment on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will undergo the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength,

  • Matthew 26:38-39: Then he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me." Going a little farther, he threw himself down with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if possible, let this cup pass from me! Yet not what I will, but what you will."

  • Matthew 27:46: At about three o'clock Jesus shouted with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

  • Isaiah 53:5: He was wounded because of our rebellious deeds, crushed because of our sins; he endured punishment that made us well; because of his wounds we have been healed.
