Biblical evidence of which day is the Sabbath and who should observe it. Also scriptural clarification on seemingly confusing verses

Verses

  • Colossians 2:14: He has destroyed what was against us, a certificate of indebtedness expressed in decrees opposed to us. He has taken it away by nailing it to the cross.

  • 2 Chronicles 33:8: I will not make Israel again leave the land I gave to their ancestors, provided that they carefully obey all I commanded them, the whole law, the rules and regulations given to Moses."

  • Deuteronomy 6:5: You must love the LORD your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength.

  • Leviticus 19:8: and the one who eats it will bear his punishment for iniquity because he has profaned what is holy to the LORD. That person will be cut off from his people.

  • Matthew 22:37-40: Jesus said to him, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."

  • Romans 13:10: Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

  • 1 Corinthians 5:7: Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough - you are, in fact, without yeast. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

  • Romans 6:14-15: For sin will have no mastery over you, because you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not!

  • Romans 3:31: Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not! Instead we uphold the law.

  • John 14:15: "If you love me, you will obey my commandments.

  • Romans 6:4: Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.

  • Luke 23:52-54: He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut out of the rock, where no one had yet been buried. It was the day of preparation and the Sabbath was beginning.

  • Luke 24:1-2: Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the aromatic spices they had prepared. They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb,

  • Luke 4:16: Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read,

  • Genesis 2:3: God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it he ceased all the work that he had been doing in creation.

  • Mark 2:27: Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath.

  • Isaiah 58:13: You must observe the Sabbath rather than doing anything you please on my holy day. You must look forward to the Sabbath and treat the LORD's holy day with respect. You must treat it with respect by refraining from your normal activities, and by refraining from your selfish pursuits and from making business deals.

  • Isaiah 56:6: As for foreigners who become followers of the LORD and serve him, who love the name of the LORD and want to be his servants - all who observe the Sabbath and do not defile it, and who are faithful to my covenant -

  • Isaiah 66:22-23: "For just as the new heavens and the new earth I am about to make will remain standing before me," says the LORD, "so your descendants and your name will remain. From one month to the next and from one Sabbath to the next, all people will come to worship me," says the LORD.

  • Acts 13:42: As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people were urging them to speak about these things on the next Sabbath.
