Description

This is a set of verses, one per chapter that I chose in my devotion time to try to give an outline of the sequence of stories in Genesis. Hopefully, it helps to find key characters quickly in the book.

Verses

  • Genesis 1:1: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

  • Genesis 2:23: Then the man said, "This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man."

  • Genesis 3:9: But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, "Where are you?"

  • Genesis 4:7: Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it."

  • Genesis 5:24: Enoch walked with God, and then he disappeared because God took him away.

  • Genesis 6:22: And Noah did all that God commanded him - he did indeed.

  • Genesis 7:16: Those that entered were male and female, just as God commanded him. Then the LORD shut him in.

  • Genesis 8:11: When the dove returned to him in the evening, there was a freshly plucked olive leaf in its beak! Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth.

  • Genesis 9:13: I will place my rainbow in the clouds, and it will become a guarantee of the covenant between me and the earth.

  • Genesis 10:32: These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, by their nations, and from these the nations spread over the earth after the flood.

  • Genesis 11:4: Then they said, "Come, let's build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves. Otherwise we will be scattered across the face of the entire earth."

  • Genesis 12:7: The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." So Abram built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

  • Genesis 13:1: So Abram went up from Egypt into the Negev. He took his wife and all his possessions with him, as well as Lot.

  • Genesis 14:12: They also took Abram's nephew Lot and his possessions when they left, for Lot was living in Sodom.

  • Genesis 15:5: The LORD took him outside and said, "Gaze into the sky and count the stars - if you are able to count them!" Then he said to him, "So will your descendants be."

  • Genesis 16:11: Then the Lord's angel said to her, "You are now pregnant and are about to give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your painful groans.

  • Genesis 17:5: No longer will your name be Abram. Instead, your name will be Abraham because I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.

  • Genesis 18:1: The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent during the hottest time of the day.

  • Genesis 19:10: So the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house as they shut the door.

  • Genesis 20:16: To Sarah he said, "Look, I have given a thousand pieces of silver to your 'brother.' This is compensation for you so that you will stand vindicated before all who are with you."

  • Genesis 21:6: Sarah said, "God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."

  • Genesis 22:12: "Do not harm the boy!" the angel said. "Do not do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God because you did not withhold your son, your only son, from me."

  • Genesis 23:9: if he will sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me publicly for the full price, so that I may own it as a burial site."

  • Genesis 24:18: "Drink, my lord," she replied, and quickly lowering her jug to her hands, she gave him a drink.

  • Genesis 25:31: But Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright."

  • Genesis 26:9: So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, "She is really your wife! Why did you say, 'She is my sister'?" Isaac replied, "Because I thought someone might kill me to get her."

  • Genesis 27:38: Esau said to his father, "Do you have only that one blessing, my father? Bless me too!" Then Esau wept loudly.

  • Genesis 28:12: and had a dream. He saw a stairway erected on the earth with its top reaching to the heavens. The angels of God were going up and coming down it

  • Genesis 29:35: She became pregnant again and had another son. She said, "This time I will praise the LORD." That is why she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.

  • Genesis 30:24: She named him Joseph, saying, "May the LORD give me yet another son."

  • Genesis 31:48: Laban said, "This pile of stones is a witness of our agreement today." That is why it was called Galeed.

  • Genesis 32:26: Then the man said, "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking." "I will not let you go," Jacob replied, "unless you bless me."

  • Genesis 33:20: There he set up an altar and called it "The God of Israel is God."

  • Genesis 34:29: They captured as plunder all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives, including everything in the houses.

  • Genesis 35:4: So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods that were in their possession and the rings that were in their ears. Jacob buried them under the oak near Shechem

  • Genesis 36:7-8: because they had too many possessions to be able to stay together and the land where they had settled was not able to support them because of their livestock. So Esau (also known as Edom) lived in the hill country of Seir.

  • Genesis 37:28: So when the Midianite merchants passed by, Joseph's brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. The Ishmaelites then took Joseph to Egypt.

  • Genesis 38:26: Judah recognized them and said, "She is more upright than I am, because I wouldn't give her to Shelah my son." He did not have sexual relations with her again.

  • Genesis 39:9: There is no one greater in this household than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?"

  • Genesis 40:23: But the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph - he forgot him.

  • Genesis 41:16: Joseph replied to Pharaoh, "It is not within my power, but God will speak concerning the welfare of Pharaoh."

  • Genesis 42:25: Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to return each man's money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. His orders were carried out.

  • Genesis 43:11: Then their father Israel said to them, "If it must be so, then do this: Take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and take a gift down to the man - a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachios and almonds.

  • Genesis 44:33: "So now, please let your servant remain as my lord's slave instead of the boy. As for the boy, let him go back with his brothers.

  • Genesis 45:5: Now, do not be upset and do not be angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me ahead of you to preserve life!

  • Genesis 46:4: I will go down with you to Egypt and I myself will certainly bring you back from there. Joseph will close your eyes."

  • Genesis 47:14: Joseph collected all the money that could be found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan as payment for the grain they were buying. Then Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's palace.

  • Genesis 48:22: As one who is above your brothers, I give to you the mountain slope, which I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow."

  • Genesis 49:31: There they buried Abraham and his wife Sarah; there they buried Isaac and his wife Rebekah; and there I buried Leah.

  • Genesis 50:26: So Joseph died at the age of 110. After they embalmed him, his body was placed in a coffin in Egypt.
