Description

These are some of the verses in the gospels when the word "must" is used (based upon the ESV). If the word "must" is used (as representing what Christ said in the original language), should we not pay close attention to those verses?

Of course, as always when studying the Bible, these verses "must" be examined in the light of the surrounding context; and in the light of the Bible as a whole.

Verses

  • Matthew 5:48: So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  • Matthew 6:5: "Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to you, they have their reward.

  • Matthew 15:4: For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.'

  • Matthew 16:21: From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

  • Matthew 20:26: It must not be this way among you! Instead whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant,

  • Matthew 20:27: and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave -

  • Matthew 24:6: You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. Make sure that you are not alarmed, for this must happen, but the end is still to come.

  • Matthew 24:44: Therefore you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

  • Mark 13:10: First the gospel must be preached to all nations.

  • Luke 2:49: But he replied, "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?"

  • Luke 5:38: Instead new wine must be poured into new wineskins.

  • Luke 17:4: Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times returns to you saying, 'I repent,' you must forgive him."

  • Luke 19:5: And when Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, because I must stay at your house today."

  • Luke 24:44: Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled."

  • John 3:7: Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must all be born from above.'

  • John 3:14: Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  • John 4:24: God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

  • John 9:4: We must perform the deeds of the one who sent me as long as it is daytime. Night is coming when no one can work.

  • John 10:16: I have other sheep that do not come from this sheepfold. I must bring them too, and they will listen to my voice, so that there will be one flock and one shepherd.

  • John 12:26: If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
