Verses

  • Ecclesiastes 9:11-12: Again, I observed this on the earth: the race is not always won by the swiftest, the battle is not always won by the strongest; prosperity does not always belong to those who are the wisest, wealth does not always belong to those who are the most discerning, nor does success always come to those with the most knowledge - for time and chance may overcome them all. Surely, no one knows his appointed time! Like fish that are caught in a deadly net, and like birds that are caught in a snare - just like them, all people are ensnared at an unfortunate time that falls upon them suddenly.

  • Ecclesiastes 10:4: If the anger of the ruler flares up against you, do not resign from your position, for a calm response can undo great offenses.

  • Ecclesiastes 10:8-10: One who digs a pit may fall into it, and one who breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake. One who quarries stones may be injured by them; one who splits logs may be endangered by them. If an iron axhead is blunt and a workman does not sharpen its edge, he must exert a great deal of effort; so wisdom has the advantage of giving success.

  • Ecclesiastes 10:18-19: Because of laziness the roof caves in, and because of idle hands the house leaks. Feasts are made for laughter, and wine makes life merry, but money is the answer for everything.

  • Ecclesiastes 10:20: Do not curse a king even in your thoughts, and do not curse the rich while in your bedroom; for a bird might report what you are thinking, or some winged creature might repeat your words.

  • Ecclesiastes 11:3-4: If the clouds are full of rain, they will empty themselves on the earth, and whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, the tree will lie wherever it falls. He who watches the wind will not sow, and he who observes the clouds will not reap.

  • Ecclesiastes 12:13-14: Having heard everything, I have reached this conclusion: Fear God and keep his commandments, because this is the whole duty of man. For God will evaluate every deed, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

  • Ecclesiastes 8:8: Just as no one has power over the wind to restrain it, so no one has power over the day of his death. Just as no one can be discharged during the battle, so wickedness cannot rescue the wicked.

  • Ecclesiastes 7:14: In times of prosperity be joyful, but in times of adversity consider this: God has made one as well as the other, so that no one can discover what the future holds.

  • Ecclesiastes 6:9: It is better to be content with what the eyes can see than for one's heart always to crave more. This continual longing is futile - like chasing the wind.

  • Ecclesiastes 4:9-12: Two people are better than one, because they can reap more benefit from their labor. For if they fall, one will help his companion up, but pity the person who falls down and has no one to help him up. Furthermore, if two lie down together, they can keep each other warm, but how can one person keep warm by himself? Although an assailant may overpower one person, two can withstand him. Moreover, a three-stranded cord is not quickly broken.

  • Proverbs 3:27-30: Do not withhold good from those who need it, when you have the ability to help. Do not say to your neighbor, "Go! Return tomorrow and I will give it," when you have it with you at the time. Do not plot evil against your neighbor when he dwells by you unsuspectingly. Do not accuse anyone without legitimate cause, if he has not treated you wrongly.

  • Proverbs 3:31-32: Do not envy a violent man, and do not choose to imitate any of his ways; for one who goes astray is an abomination to the Lord, but he reveals his intimate counsel to the upright.

  • Proverbs 4:23-26: Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it are the sources of life. Remove perverse speech from your mouth; keep devious talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look directly in front of you and let your gaze look straight before you. Make the path for your feet level, so that all your ways may be established.

  • Proverbs 4:14-16: Do not enter the path of the wicked or walk in the way of those who are evil. Avoid it, do not go on it; turn away from it, and go on. For they cannot sleep unless they cause harm; they are robbed of sleep until they make someone stumble.

  • Proverbs 6:16-19: There are six things that the LORD hates, even seven things that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift to run to evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who spreads discord among family members.

  • Proverbs 9:7-10: Whoever corrects a mocker is asking for insult; whoever reproves a wicked person receives abuse. Do not reprove a mocker or he will hate you; reprove a wise person and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise person, and he will become wiser still; teach a righteous person and he will add to his learning. The beginning of wisdom is to fear the LORD, and acknowledging the Holy One is understanding.

  • Proverbs 10:17-19: The one who heeds instruction is on the way to life, but the one who rejects rebuke goes astray. The one who conceals hatred utters lies, and the one who spreads slander is certainly a fool. When words abound, transgression is inevitable, but the one who restrains his words is wise.

  • Proverbs 12:1: The one who loves discipline loves knowledge, but the one who hates reproof is stupid.

  • Proverbs 12:15-16: The way of a fool is right in his own opinion, but the one who listens to advice is wise. A fool's annoyance is known at once, but the prudent overlooks an insult.

  • Proverbs 12:23: The shrewd person conceals knowledge, but foolish people publicize folly.

  • Proverbs 12:24: The diligent person will rule, but the slothful will become a slave.

  • Proverbs 13:1: A wise son accepts his father's discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.

  • Proverbs 13:3: The one who guards his words guards his life, but whoever is talkative will come to ruin.

  • Proverbs 14:15-16: A naive person believes everything, but the shrewd person discerns his steps. A wise person is cautious and turns from evil, but a fool throws off restraint and is overconfident.

  • Proverbs 16:3: Commit your works to the LORD, and your plans will be established.

  • Proverbs 17:5: The one who mocks the poor insults his Creator; whoever rejoices over disaster will not go unpunished.

  • Proverbs 17:9: The one who forgives an offense seeks love, but whoever repeats a matter separates close friends.

  • Proverbs 17:14: Starting a quarrel is like letting out water; stop it before strife breaks out!

  • Proverbs 17:27-28: The truly wise person restrains his words, and the one who stays calm is discerning. Even a fool who remains silent is considered wise, and the one who holds his tongue is deemed discerning.

  • Proverbs 18:12: Before destruction the heart of a person is proud, but humility comes before honor.

  • Proverbs 19:2: It is dangerous to have zeal without knowledge, and the one who acts hastily makes poor choices.

  • Proverbs 19:19: A person with great anger bears the penalty, but if you deliver him from it once, you will have to do it again.

  • Proverbs 20:19: The one who goes about gossiping reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with someone who is always opening his mouth.

  • Proverbs 22:1: A good name is to be chosen rather than great wealth, good favor more than silver or gold.

  • Proverbs 22:10: Drive out the scorner and contention will leave; strife and insults will cease.

  • Proverbs 25:6-8: Do not honor yourself before the king, and do not stand in the place of great men; for it is better for him to say to you, "Come up here," than to put you lower before a prince, whom your eyes have seen. Do not go out hastily to litigation, or what will you do afterward when your neighbor puts you to shame?

  • Proverbs 25:17: Don't set foot too frequently in your neighbor's house, lest he become weary of you and hate you.

  • Proverbs 28:2: When a country is rebellious it has many princes, but by someone who is discerning and knowledgeable order is maintained.

  • Proverbs 28:4: Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law contend with them.

  • Proverbs 30:17: The eye that mocks at a father and despises obeying a mother - the ravens of the valley will peck it out and the young vultures will eat it.

  • Proverbs 26:17: Like one who grabs a wild dog by the ears, so is the person passing by who becomes furious over a quarrel not his own.
