TheMoviegoer started learning Complete - Mark 01

onfire247 2022-02-17 13:58

Since we seem to be on similar journeys, I thought you might want to know that I just finished the last two verses of John! It has been a long 18 month experience, although I've taken a few side journeys along the way. How close are you to finishing Mark?

TheMoviegoer 2022-02-17 19:10

Oh wow! Congratulations, Onfire247. I can't believe you made it through John. That was my first choice. Only a brief stint as a Sunday School teacher directed me to Mark. I am so excited for you and I know what an accomplishment it is. Thanks for keeping me going in the low points. I am amazed, humbled, and so excited for you! How wonderful. As Jesus quotes in Mark (yes, this is out of context... sort of) "This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes!"

TheMoviegoer 2022-02-17 19:11

As for Mark, I am bogged down in 12. I have completed 1-12, but I am having trouble moving on. It sort of brought me down to realize that I will not be done by Easter, but it is only a minor setback.

TheMoviegoer 2022-02-17 19:15

Also, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God."

TheMoviegoer 2022-02-17 19:15

I really am proud of you, sir!

onfire247 2022-02-17 22:10

Thanks! It has been a long journey for both of us. I can't wait to celebrate when you finish!

TheMoviegoer 2022-02-18 04:05

Me too! Thanks, man!

joosep 2022-02-18 05:55

Onfire, I wish to congratulate you on that accomplishment re: the Gospel of John! Your persistence over a period of 18 months is a role model for us all. I'm sure the fully learnt will be pouring in as well, beyond the 236 you have today. Speaking of that, 236 in 18 months also seems to me to be a noteworthy achievement.

You too Moviegoer, I really admire your persistence and what you are doing and enjoy watching it from afar!

TheMoviegoer 2022-02-18 11:28

Thanks, joosep!
I love the thought that if we all walked into a church someday, together, we all could share significant portions of scripture. Onfire247, as have all of you, have been such a key part of keeping my efforts on track. Sometimes, it is just a simple message. Other times, it is the sharing of the process. But it inspires me to see and hear about the work along the way.

onfire247 2022-02-18 14:20

Thanks for the kind words, joosep. Now, on to Romans!

TheMoviegoer 2022-02-18 20:18

Hey, I'll meet you there. Seriously want to go there next. My wife and my daughter both want to memorize Romans, but have not really gotten hooked on the site yet.

onfire247 2022-02-18 21:59

I started at verse 1:18. I may skip chapter 16 as well at first. We'll see. I imagine Romans will be easier to memorize because of Paul's writing style. Of course, I also have a heavy background in KJV so that may mess with my ESV memorization. Time will tell I guess.

Also, joosep, you said I've been mastering at a high rate. Am I really? It doesn't seem so. I've been on the site about 18 months, and I'm averaging two verses per day. Since it takes about a year to master a verse, You'd think I'd be somewhere in the 350 range on mastered. I feel like I'm behind the curve a bit. Still, I'm happy to have mastered any really since it takes so long. I'm always amazed when I see people running around with 1k+ verses mastered, but I guess I'll be there eventually "Lord willing and crick don't rise."

Plus, to be honest, I'm about ready to be done memorizing John. I love John, but it will be refreshing to move to something else. I'll definitely be happy when John goes fully mastered, although that will still be a year off (or longer if chapters 11-13 are any indicator sigh).

TheMoviegoer 2022-02-18 22:18

Yes, the mastering thing is rough. I have been working on Mark over a year, and only 9 verses have been mastered. And now, I have a few short verses that got hugely docked when a string of typing errors dropped my percentage horrifically. I don't know if I'll ever master them on the site, despite the fact that they are totally mastered in my head.

Definitely an encouragement to hear of you learning complete books. Well done onfire247 on completing Johns Gospel. And I think you should get your 18 month badge pretty soon too! I think I’m about 6 or 7 verses away from completing John’s Gospel too. I’ve loved it. I’ve kept taking breaks but it’s definitely my favourite place to be. Not sure yet what’s next.

Lots of inspiration in this conversation. Mastery or not, spending time in the Word especially at the soaking in slow pace of learning and repeating and typing at least the first letter of each word is working something incredible in our lives! Blessings to you all!

onfire247 2022-02-19 01:45

That's awesome, JD!

This is an enjoyable conversation to read :)

Yes, 236 seems a lot to me Onfire, but I totally understand how it could feel as if it ought to be more. I guess I was thinking along the lines of what Moviegoer said, how short verses especially can be pushed far back if they are not remembered correctly. I had that experience many times too. It actually has always seemed a bit problematic to me, because then there's a passage which I mostly know very very well, but yet it keeps coming up more often than it should for review due to a verse or two or three pushed far back in its progress percentage. Then I have a choice, I can review the whole passage, or only the three or four, which always feels as if I'm doing it without much thought (hard for me to explain).

For that reason I've recently tended more towards shorter passages of 10-15 verses or so, rather than whole chapters. But to each their own :)

I also had a version difficulty roughly similar to your own, Onfire. When I started here in 2015, I used the ESV. But my background and memorization had always been with the NASB. So I used the ESV for quite a while, but then I think sometime in late 2018 the NASB was made available here. So that was one reason why I then reset everything and started all over with the NASB :) Looking back I don't regret that now, it simply gave me extra reinforcement with all those special verses.

Wishing you all blessings through and in God's Word,
Joosep
