rhuddle started learning Romans 8:18-21

graetzmi23 2015-06-22 12:16

I don't know how you remember where all the verses you learn belong! You learn so many but how do you keep track? Do you have a particular system for determining what verses you learn?

rhuddle 2015-06-22 13:18

My first goal in using learnscripture is just to meditate on verses. And, yes, I do have to use a search tool sometimes to find the verse that I started learning. I use esvbible.com.

I do hope to eventually memorize many many verses, but my main use it as a daily meditation tool. Therefore, I may start learning a verse, use it for meditating on, and then not come back to it. I have only memorized one verse completely so that tells you that I am not covering many verses though I have been doing learn scripture for a while, though I had a significant period where I wasn't doing any. I do sometimes go and work on the verses that I am close to completing so that I can "finish," in some sense, verses that I am most familiar with.

I do think of going through and doing all my verses when I have some time off, but that hasn't happened in a long time. Most days, whatever verse comes to my mind when I wake up or when I am praying, I review that verse and verses around that verse or perhaps the whole chapter.

Thanks for asking. May we receive and walk in the freedom of the glory of the children of God through Christ today. From Romans 8:21.

As to your last question, I have some large goals, such as:
1. Memorizing a verse from every book of the bible.
2. Memorizing a verse from every chapter of the bible.
3. Memorizing the new testament.

But, more importantly, I am seeking to walk with the Lord each day and most days I have a need in my spirit and soul and circumstances that I am seeking God to speak to me through his word. So, the verses I pick are based on that need.

I am 47 and I am familiar with much of the bible, though I am much weaker in parts of the old testament. For about 9 months I have been listening to the bible straight through, on and off, and I am only in Nehemiah. But that helps me to continue to get familiar with all of scripture so I can hopefully find what the Lord wants me to know and be meditating on.

I went to Romans 8 today because the sermon at church referenced it and another book that I was reading referenced. So, today, I started by reviewing my current Romans 8 verses, and then adding the next ones from the chapter that I need in my spirit.

How do you use Learnscripture and how is the Lord blessing you through it?

I see. I wasn't expecting such a detailed response so thank you.
So you use the site primarily as a tool to slow you down and read verses thoroughly so you can think on them with the secondary goal of retaining some of the verses? So you do not keep to the review schedule strictly but will review when you want to look closely at those verses again? Interesting. What's your motivation behind learning a verse from every book and chapter?
Being relatively young myself (23) I look forward to a life time of studying the scriptures. Hence, I use a more methodical approach. Like you I would like to commit the whole new testament to memory. I've started with Romans as a foundation but I am still considering where I will go from there. Maybe something shorter like one of the Petrine epistles or James. Or I've been considering learning one of the gospels, probably Mark since it is the shortest but I've heard a few good sermons on John recently.
As well, I hope to learn the Psalms which help give me greatly in my prayers and with worship. Of course I throw in other passages here and there, but I try to stay away from individual verses so I can keep things in a larger context.

Thank you for your comments and further questions. As to your first question, yes, I think that is pretty accurate for now. Correct, I do not keep any methodical review schedule for now.

My motivation for learning a verse from every book and chapter is to know what God's word says in a thorough way. If I know a verse, I know something of what the book and chapter is about and I the Holy Spirit can direct me there. I try to pick verses that are key verses for a book and chapter, although I agree about the importance of context. I want to know the context too, but I generally start with a verse or two and then add to it.

My motivation is also mixed with pride and probably false expectations and hypocrisy and other sin. May the Lord forgive me and cleanse me of these and every other hidden fault. Thank God for his grace to me in Christ. May it be sufficient for me and may he use my motivations for good even though they are impure.

May the Lord bless you and lead you in your meditation and memorization. I enjoy the psalms and proverbs a lot and work on sections from those. Do you work on any other sections of scripture other than Romans, like a psalm, as the same time?

graetzmi23 2015-06-23 12:03

I guess that could be helpful to remember what a particular book or chapter is about. For example I saw that were learning Zechariah (I think. One of the minor prophets anyway) and I admit I don't remember what that particular book is about.
I try to learn passages a chapter at a time so when I feel like I need some time to think about a chapter of Romans I'll switch over and learn a Psalm or something else (I just did Isaiah 40).

Interesting to hear from both of you how you are using this site. Graetzmi- if you´re looking for somewhere to go after you finish Romans, let me recommend the gospel of John. I started at Easter this year learning the ressurection, and it was so rewarding i just kept going, finished off the book and then decided to start from the beginning and do the rest. Up to John 7 so far, and finding it very rewarding! I´m so used to just reading "bits" at a time, that I find it interesting to hear "the whole story" and see how things fit together. Had to use google maps to find out where cana and capernaum and other places actually are so that I can follow the whole journey!

I think I will learn John, Robinshe. I really want to finish Romans now!

rhuddle 2015-06-30 11:40

Robinshe, what are some of your goals, plans, and methods?

Robinshe 2015-06-30 17:17

Good questions! My goals have changed since I started out. I signed up because I wanted to learn where to find things (f ex where´s that bit about shining like stars in the universe), and to know exactly what the Bible says instead of knowing vaguely that it says somewhere something along the lines of... I started out trying to learn a bunch of key verses, which is nice, but I still find it hard to remember where to find them, and they feel taken out of context. I discovered that it was actually easier, and I decided more meaningful, to learn whole chunks rather than indivdual verses. I stumbled into John just as an Easter project, and I´m still enjoying that. Not sure where to go after that, but Romans is a good candidate, although some of it is a little dense. My method is to try and learn a few verses every day, but never more than a few, otherwise they pile up too quickly in the review! If I have extra energy, I´ll go back and review at random various chunks or psalms that I learned before. I´ve never been able to stick to any kind of bible reading plan or verse-a-day program, despite the very best of intentions, but I find that the points and statistics give me just that little extra motivation I need to not miss a day. There have been days I have almost forgotten and end up quickly learning something just before midnight just to not miss a day. I do it about half on the computer and half on my mobile phone, which gives a little variation in learning. It´s well enough designed to be about equally hard - the multiple choice set-up on the phone should in theory be a little easier, but there are no hints, and you have to know exactly whether it´s "the heavens declare" or "the heaven declares", which the computer doesn´t care about. So I find it useful to use both methods. I find that since starting to learn scripture, I am reminded of scripture more often in day-to-day situations, I know more about exactly what it says and where, and I have discovered new things through being forced to slow down my reading to a pace of just a few verses a day. And hopefully, although I don´t see it myself, I will gradually be more infused with God´s word which will reflect in the way I see the world around me and the way in which others see me and see something of God through me. Long answer to a short question!
