Description
The author of the Gospel of John weaves the doctrine of the Holy Spirit throughout his book.
- He is the power that Jesus receives to begin his ministry (John 1:32-33).
- His presence is a prerequisite of entering the kingdom of Heaven (John 3:5-8).
- He is given to the disciples without measure (John 3:34).
- His presence is a necessity to truly worship God (John 4:23).
- He is the giver of life (John 6:63).
- He is the promised gift for those who are believers of Jesus (John 7:37-39).
- He is the power who dwells in you that enables you to keep God's commandments (John 14:15-18).
- He is the Peacebringer who both teaches all things and brings into remembrance the words of Jesus (John 25:27).
- He is the one who bears witness about Christ to the world (John 15:26-27).
- He is the one who convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:7-8).
- He is the declarer of the Word of God who shows the disciple what is to come (John 16:12-15).
- He is the Peace that goes with the one who speaks on behalf of God (John 20:21-23).

Verses
-
John 1:32-33: Then John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining - this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
-
John 3:5-8: Jesus answered, "I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must all be born from above.' The wind blows wherever it will, and you hear the sound it makes, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
-
John 3:34: For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he does not give the Spirit sparingly.
-
John 4:23: But a time is coming - and now is here - when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.
-
John 6:63: The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
-
John 7:37-39: On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, 'From within him will flow rivers of living water.'" (Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.)
-
John 14:15-18: "If you love me, you will obey my commandments. Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever - the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides with you and will be in you. "I will not abandon you as orphans, I will come to you.
-
John 14:25-27: "I have spoken these things while staying with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and will cause you to remember everything I said to you. "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; I do not give it to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage.
-
John 15:26-27: When the Advocate comes, whom I will send you from the Father - the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father - he will testify about me, and you also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.
-
John 16:7-8: But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment -
-
John 16:12-15: "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you what is to come. He will glorify me, because he will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you.
-
John 20:21-23: So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you." And after he said this, he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained."
