Here are the Old Testament verses that are quoted most frequently in the New Testament (allusions or echoes don't count in this list).

Verses

  • Leviticus 19:18: You must not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people, but you must love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

  • Exodus 20:12: "Honor your father and your mother, that you may live a long time in the land the LORD your God is giving to you.

  • Exodus 20:13: "You shall not murder.

  • Exodus 20:14: "You shall not commit adultery.

  • Psalm 110:1: Here is the LORD's proclamation to my lord: "Sit down at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool!"

  • Isaiah 6:9-10: He said, "Go and tell these people: 'Listen continually, but don't understand! Look continually, but don't perceive!' Make the hearts of these people calloused; make their ears deaf and their eyes blind! Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, their hearts might understand and they might repent and be healed."

  • Genesis 2:24: That is why a man leaves his father and mother and unites with his wife, and they become a new family.

  • Exodus 3:6: He added, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." Then Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

  • Psalm 118:22: The stone which the builders discarded has become the cornerstone.

  • Isaiah 40:3: A voice cries out, "In the wilderness clear a way for the LORD; construct in the desert a road for our God.

  • Genesis 15:6: Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD considered his response of faith as proof of genuine loyalty.

  • Deuteronomy 6:5: You must love the LORD your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength.

  • Psalm 2:7: The king says, "I will announce the Lord's decree. He said to me: 'You are my son! This very day I have become your father!

  • Psalm 40:6-8: Receiving sacrifices and offerings are not your primary concern. You make that quite clear to me! You do not ask for burnt sacrifices and sin offerings. Then I say, "Look! I come! What is written in the scroll pertains to me. I want to do what pleases you, my God. Your law dominates my thoughts."

  • Psalm 95:7-8: For he is our God; we are the people of his pasture, the sheep he owns. Today, if only you would obey him! He says, "Do not be stubborn like they were at Meribah, like they were that day at Massah in the wilderness,

  • Psalm 110:4: The LORD makes this promise on oath and will not revoke it: "You are an eternal priest after the pattern of Melchizedek."

  • Isaiah 28:16: Therefore, this is what the sovereign master, the Lord, says: "Look, I am laying a stone in Zion, an approved stone, set in place as a precious cornerstone for the foundation. The one who maintains his faith will not panic.

  • Isaiah 56:7: I will bring them to my holy mountain; I will make them happy in the temple where people pray to me. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar, for my temple will be known as a temple where all nations may pray."

  • Jeremiah 31:33: "But I will make a new covenant with the whole nation of Israel after I plant them back in the land," says the LORD. "I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts and minds. I will be their God and they will be my people.

  • Habakkuk 2:4: Look, the one whose desires are not upright will faint from exhaustion, but the person of integrity will live because of his faithfulness.

  • Malachi 3:1: "I am about to send my messenger, who will clear the way before me. Indeed, the Lord you are seeking will suddenly come to his temple, and the messenger of the covenant, whom you long for, is certainly coming," says the LORD who rules over all.
