that's good news! 7 days is the beginning of 70!

FinalAsgard 2023-08-05 05:22

I know this is a very small victory, but I’m celebrating it anyway! I made it back up to a 7 day streak on here after a lot of trying to get back into things!

FinalAsgard! What a great testimony. I just watched your recitation of Phil 3 on YouTube. Absolutely a joy to hear and watch!

joosep 2023-05-20 16:23

I just watched it. Very well done! Recited with feeling and conviction. The Word of God does not return void.

God is so good! “His word is living and active…” Such a good example of the fruit of memorizing His word, FinalAsgard!

joosep 2023-05-09 15:02

thank you for sharing that. That's a very good testimony, and I hope a lot of people read it and learn something from it :)

FinalAsgard 2023-05-09 15:00

Joosep, thank you for praying for me. I really appreciate it. :)

I want to celebrate that I learned something yesterday. As I'm working on memorizing James 1, the verse "count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness."

I was having a wildly bad day at work yesterday, and was meditating on this verse. How does a trial like this, which has nothing to do with my faith, produce steadfastness in my faith? How is this "various type of trial" test my faith?

Then I thought of the previous thing I memorized, from Philippians 4. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God, and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Well, going through a crazy trial at work, I was reminded to pray, pray with thanksgiving, and then God most definitely supplied a peace that is unfathomable. And that, God providing his peace during a crazy bad situation at work, when I'm praying to him with thanksgiving, that builds my faith.

I want to say, as we've both embarked on a new Scripture "journey" at the same time ... I'm praying for you every day, that each day as you add a verse in James it will enrich you and be used by God the Holy Spirit to mold you more closely into the image of His Son. That experience as I'm sure you know is sometimes painful, but always ultimately joyful. I pray the same for myself as I go through Luke. Thank you Brother.

joosep 2023-04-28 03:44

thank you again for sharing your journey with us, and I look forward to hearing more in the future :)

FinalAsgard 2023-04-27 11:37

Thank you gouts for all the words of encouragement and advice. Great things to think about here… I need more prayer.

I am making it a gosh this week to read through Luke and James with the intention of praying over of these are the passages I want to memorize.

While the idea of memorizing 3 verses a day, each from a different part of the Bible sounds interesting, that would be too disconnected, I think. However, I have thought about alternating books. So learn Luke 1, then James 1, then Luke 2, etc. Luke 1 is a huge first step in itself though (80 verses!).

Still praying over it. I would like to get started next week, though. I miss adding new verses to my memory…

TheMoviegoer 2023-04-27 09:40

FinalAsgard,

I am almost a year and a half into memorizing the entire Gospel of Mark, and I am so pleased that I am nearly done. I believe it is the shortest Gospel, so I believe three years is a fair plan.

Keep us posted!

Hey FinalAsgard, your idea of memorizing Luke is excellent.
I have some thoughts on memorizing the gospels for my own future plans, which you might find helpful.

The Bible is the most precious book on earth, and the Gospels contain most of the direct teachings of Jesus Christ.
Remember John 6:68 "Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."
Obtaining eternal life is the most valuable thing, and the words of Jesus Christ are essential to this.

Also, Jesus makes this remarkable promise in John 14:21
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
"Keeping" implies both memorizing and obedience.
It's hard to obey the commandments of Jesus if you can't remember what they are!

Also, Matthew 28:20 says, "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you."
So the teachings of Jesus are vital to ministry.

And Matthew 5:19 says,
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Based on these verses, I feel that memorizing the words of Jesus takes priority over the narrative sections.
And memorizing all the teachings of Jesus found in all the gospels would take less time than the entire book of Luke or the entire book of Matthew.

If you get a red letter Bible and compare the gospels, Matthew and John have many long sections of the teaching of Jesus, and I find them to be written in a very memorable style, so I would learn those first.
Luke has some unique red letter sections also, not found in other gospels. They are also some of the most challenging in terms of obedience. (Luke 12 and 14)

I usually read the books through many times before embarking on memorizing, which makes them a lot easier to learn. Also this gives you time to pray and find out which books and passages the Lord wants you learn at this point in time.

Congratulations, FinalAsgard -- that is an excellent achievement. Regarding Luke, of course it's your decision and you know better than me what's best, but I'd offer this take on it: imagine how you would feel one year from now, after doing one verse per day, and then being able to say that you had begun nearly one third of Luke. In addition, one verse a day would possibly enable you to work on other parts of the Bible at the same time. You might even consider (if you have the time for this) three verses per day; one from a gospel, one from a Pauline letter, and one from the OT, perhaps the Psalms. Then you get a variety :)

Whatever you may decide, may the Lord bless your path as You walk with Him in consistency. And thank you for sharing your testimony and the video -- I'm sure it will motivate and inspire other people on this site to put even more effort into memorisation :)

FinalAsgard 2023-04-26 22:46

Thank you for all that info. The thought of doing a 3 year project is intimidating, but I was thinking that I could try 2 verses per day, but then taking a week off after each chapter. I don’t know, though. I’m praying hard about this

What a great video! That is quite an accomplishment.

Regarding what to memorize next, Luke is a great gospel and one of my favorites to read. I'm currently memorizing chapter 15 myself. That said, I advise you to take the words of Luke himself, that you "consider the cost" involved with such an endeavor (14:28-30). Luke is the largest book in the NT by far (19,482 words and 1151 verses). If you memorize a verse daily, it will take over three years to touch every verse (and another three years to master it, at least).

If you are going to do it, I recommend going down the dramatic recitation path that many use successfully on the Gospels. It will help keep you from getting confused when similar verses start sounding the same. Here is a good example of someone doing it with Luke (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aoPLWl7tig).

If you do decide on Luke, one benefit you'll have is that your mind is now in memorization mode. Plus, you've proven to yourself that you can memorize a book! Additionally, this video proves that memorizing Luke can be done. And since you put your pants on one leg at a time just like he does (and serve the same God), you can do it too.

As a side note, many biblical scholars agree that Luke (3.19%) was actually written as part of a two-part series with Acts (3.02%) being the sequel. Some scholars even argue that they are in fact one book, which is a stretch (although some translations present it as such). If this theory is true, however, Luke and Acts would become the largest book in the Bible, surpassing Genesis (5.24%), Psalms (4.93%), and Ezekiel (4.89%).

Reposting the video link due to a technical problem:
I recorded a video of reciting Philippians. https://youtu.be/jo2wbdn3bEQ

FinalAsgard 2023-04-26 14:29

I'm not sure what to do next. I'm praying about that. Thinking about Luke because I want a gospel. But maybe something less ambitious, like James.

Goodnews 2023-04-26 08:56

loved seeing you video. What a blessing!
