I think that this whole passage is my favorite part of all of John. There´s something magical about their interaction and the way in which a Gentile woman who has no formal background and education to recognize the Christ, but who has heard of him from others, comes to realise and believe that she is actually speaking with the Saviour of the world and brings other unlikely converts to faith in him.
Hi Joosep and Happy New Year to you as well! Just a few minutes past midnight here in Oslo, and we just fired off a rather spectacular set of fireworks!! You´re a tough guy to catch - I did my very best but can´t quite catch up to you, and I´m betting you´ll have broken 1000 verses by the time I wake up tomorrow. All the best :-)
You have overtaken me on the leaderboard Robinshe! Well done. I may be doing less for a while at least, as I have an art exhibition coming up in March and need a lot of new work. Funnily enough, the series is on Australia's Scarlet Robins! So, now over to you, and joosep and others :)
Agreed! I have to add, having now struggled my way up to the weekly top, I have huge respect for you and graetzmi23 and joosep and ByGraceAlone who have consistently achieved this kind of level. And I also find it encouraging to see such a large number of people who may not review quite as many verses per day, but who day after day return to study a few more verses. When they wrote "let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another", what on earth would they think if they knew that 2000 years later we would be doing just that via an "app", chatting with people real time across the planet, to read and study the message they were proclaiming! God bless you all, and Annette, let us know how your exhibition goes!
Thankyou joosep and Robinshe. Yes, there is something so wonderful about meditating on Scripture, unlike anything else. I still hope to keep it up during this busy time, but maybe not quite so many verses per day.
Yes I'm sure we will still be seeing you there in the leaderboard Annette :) And to Robinshe, yes that's precisely the verse that often comes to my mind in connection with this site.
yup :-) can´t let you get away that easily... (and actually, I can´t leave John alone... having got all the way through it it´s now time to see how much of it I actually still remember :-)
Well done!! It's an encouragement to me to see other folks sticking at it. I'm glad you enjoy learning John. I'm really enjoying my memorisation in that book.
And I've just seen that you've overtaken me in number of verses learnt. 👍 I'm just plodding away like a tortoise so I expect there'll be a few more doing that soon. Great to see.
Interesting - the angel says to Zechariah "your wife will bear a son" and Zecharia says "how can this be, because we are old" and the angel says "you will be mute because you did not believe". But 6 months later, the same angel comes to Mary and says "you will have a son" and Mary says "how can this be, for I am a virgin"...and the angel just explains! Why does Mary get off so easy? Was she just curious about the mechanics as opposed to seriously doubting God´s ability? Even in stories I know well I discover new things...
Well done, almost up to a million! Feel free to join us on the "leaderboard for everyone" board if you would like some company - there´s a good bunch of people there. :-)

Thank you for that, Grace-Alone! Very cool to think that people I have never even actually met are praying for me. I also sometimes pray for all of you guys here. And with John fresh in memory, I know those prayers are being heard and honoured :-)
Congratulations! Hope you´re enjoying this site. If you would like, feel free to join us on the "Leaderboard group for everyone" board for some company and encouragement along the way, there´s a great bunch of people there...
Congratulations! And welcome to the boards... feel free to come and join us on the "leaderboard group for everyone" board if you would like some company and encouragement along the way :-)
Great start! Feel free to come and join a bunch of us on the "Leaderboard Group for everyone" board for some company and encouragement along the way if you would like :-)
James will be my next project. But for now, a little christmas spirit with Luke. Have to just add, though, that I really recommend going all the way through John. I´m sure the other gospels will give me important new insights and angles, but I think John will always have a special place for me now :-)
You caught me cheating! (sort of). I have 11 verses left in all of John, but yesterday was a busy day, I needed my one new verse, but the 11 verses left are buried deep in Chapter 19, and I didn´t have time to review my way all the way through to get a new one, so I started Luke instead! No, I´m not planning on doing all of Luke (yet), but I was wondering what to do after John and decided that at this time of year, just the first two chapters of Luke might be appropriate (although I had´t realised the first chapter was so long). That gives me time to think about what to do next. Probably James, just for a complete change of scene. Will let you know when I finally get my 11 verses finished!

I know the feeling, Robinshe, although probably not quite as bad as with some of those really long chapters in the gospels. Do tell us when you're finished learning!
For some reason I find John's writing easier to learn than others. I really struggle with Paul's writings. Interested to hear where you'll go after John. Well done for sticking with John until the end (almost!)
Interesting, JDJDJD. I have tried to learn a bit of everyone so far: some of Paul (Romans, Colossians), James, Peter (1 Peter) and now doing John (1 John). I have found James to be the easiest, followed by Paul, followed by Peter followed by John. John has a very unique vocabulary whereas I found Paul and Peter to be quite similar.
While several people are gathered here, I'd like to apologize for something. I'm probably filling up your news stream with news about me learning new sets. It's because I originally created small sets of each chapter with titles. I abandoned that method and cancelled them, but now I want to go back to the smaller sets to aim for greater accuracy and something a little closer to actual memorization. The thing is, all those sets I originally created as public, and now that can't be undone, so every time I choose to learn one of those sets again, it appears on your news stream.
ha ha :-) Yes, a while ago I was wondering how long it took to get to learn a verse completely - they say about a year, but I can´t remember which verses I started learning a year ago and I haven´t been following my progress on any particular verse. Then I just forgot about it and all of a sudden a badge popped up today! Very suitable on the first Sunday in Advent that my first verses completely learned are from John 1 :-)
